Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Standing at 208 feet, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest and probably most recognized lighthouse in the United States. Its light can be seen 20 miles at sea and even today warns unsuspecting mariners of the dangerous Diamond Shoals that extend 14 miles out into the ocean off Cape Hatters. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is constructed with 1,200,000 bricks. Its walls are 14' thick at the base, narrowing to 8' at the top, and weighs 6,250 tons. In 1999 with the ever-encroaching Atlantic Ocean threatening the lighthouse was moved from its original location to its present location approximately 1/2 inland.
